As a part of a series of initiatives carried out this year to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, New Acropolis of Viseu (Portugal), together with the Agnimile Oriental Studies Circle and the support of the Grão Vasco Museum, commenced a course led by Ricardo Louro Martins (PhD in History and Culture of Religions at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon and trainer of New Acropolis of Viseu).
With a duration of 50 hours (distributed over one Sunday a month), the objective of this course is to introduce participants to the Sanskrit alphabet and grammar, as well as its development, classification and training process, in order to study and investigate India’s historical, linguistic and cultural heritage.
Learning is done through correct pronunciation, reading, writing and exercises taken from Sanskrit sources. The study of Sanskrit is contextualized in an interdisciplinary and practical way, through the exploration of key Hindu concepts and the analysis of some of the most important works of ancient Indian literature.
